Job Title

Senior Linux Systems Engineer

Role Summary

As a Senior Linux Systems Engineer on the HW Engineering Compute team, you will manage the health, performance, and scalability of large-scale on-premises and public-cloud compute environments that support EDA workloads. The role focuses on Linux administration, cloud-bursting architecture, HPC optimization, and automation to enable semiconductor design compute needs.

Experience Level

Senior — the posting specifies 3+ years of direct Linux system administration experience; Qualcomm also lists an alternate pathway of 5+ years of IT-related experience without a Bachelor’s degree.

Responsibilities

Primary duties include operating and improving hybrid on-premises and cloud HPC infrastructure for EDA workloads.

  • Administer enterprise Linux distributions (RHEL, Rocky Linux, Ubuntu, SLES).
  • Design and maintain cloud-bursting solutions integrating on-prem HPC schedulers (Slurm, PBS, LSF) with public cloud providers.
  • Standardize configuration across on-prem and cloud using configuration management and infrastructure-as-code.
  • Develop script-based automations to capture triage workflows and reduce manual interventions.
  • Optimize cloud instance selection, networking (e.g., EFA), and storage for memory- and compute-heavy EDA workloads.
  • Implement cost-governance and cloud cost-optimization measures without impacting engineering schedules.
  • Use observability and monitoring tools to identify and diagnose performance bottlenecks.
  • Work with engineering and facilities teams to tune OS-level settings to improve EDA tool performance.

Requirements

Must-have technical capabilities and preferred additions.

  • Must-have: Expert administration of RHEL, Rocky Linux, Ubuntu, or SLES; hands-on experience deploying/managing Linux workloads in at least one major public cloud (AWS, Azure, or GCP); familiarity with HPC job schedulers (Slurm, PBS, LSF); scripting/automation skills; and experience with observability tools.
  • Must-have: Ability to design and operate hybrid on-prem/cloud HPC environments and implement cloud cost-governance strategies.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with cloud-native HPC tooling (AWS ParallelCluster, Azure CycleCloud) or cloud storage solutions (NetApp/Lustre); advanced Terraform skills; familiarity with EDA tool compute characteristics.

Education Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related STEM field is listed as a minimum; alternatively Qualcomm accepts 5+ years of IT-related work experience without a Bachelor’s degree. The posting also references preferred cloud certifications such as AWS Certified SysOps Administrator, Azure Administrator Associate, or equivalent GCP certification.
