Job Title

Senior Linux SRE (Site Reliability Engineer)

Role Summary

Join Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) within the Silicon Development Compute Solutions (SDCS) team to design, deploy, and operate Linux-based HPC compute infrastructure that supports silicon design workloads.

The role focuses on identity and access management (LDAP/IdM/Entra ID), Linux system administration across on-prem and Azure, and ensuring availability and performance of compute and storage services used by CAD and engineering teams.

Experience Level

Senior-level. Typical background includes multiple years of Linux server administration and infrastructure engineering; see Education Requirements for degree/experience combinations and preferred experience levels.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include building and operating identity and HPC infrastructure and supporting engineering teams.

  • Design, implement, and maintain enterprise identity and access solutions using LDAP, Red Hat IdM, and Microsoft Entra ID.
  • Administer LDAP directory services: authentication, authorization, schema management, and app integrations.
  • Manage Red Hat IdM components such as Kerberos, DNS, replication, and user lifecycle.
  • Configure and support Entra ID integrations, identity synchronization, conditional access, and hybrid identity scenarios.
  • Operate and optimize Linux environments (Red Hat, Rocky Linux) across on-premises and Azure; handle installation, patching, and troubleshooting.
  • Support engineering services (e.g., Exceed TurboX, VNC) and ensure high availability and performance.
  • Implement monitoring and alerting to ensure reliability and proactive incident response.
  • Collaborate with storage and CAD teams to diagnose platform issues and optimize performance for design workloads.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills, operational requirements, and compliance/clearance expectations. See Education Requirements for degree and equivalent-experience combinations.

  • Hands-on experience administering LDAP and identity management systems and integrating them with enterprise applications.
  • Experience managing Red Hat IdM (Kerberos, DNS, replication) and Linux authentication services.
  • Experience with Microsoft Entra ID authentication, synchronization, and hybrid identity patterns.
  • Strong Linux server administration skills (Red Hat, Rocky Linux) across on-prem and cloud platforms.
  • System automation experience (Shell, Perl, Python, Ansible) - scripting and automation to manage infrastructure.
  • Experience with monitoring, alerting, and incident response for large-scale systems.
  • Familiarity with enterprise storage systems (Isilon, Pure Storage, Azure NetApp Files) and troubleshooting storage-related issues on Linux.
  • Experience supporting engineering teams and CAD/EDA workloads preferred.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft security screening requirements (including Cloud Background Check) and export-control eligibility; candidates must be able to provide proof of citizenship or permanent residency when required for export-controlled information.
  • Travel: less than 25% as required.

Education Requirements

Required/minimum combinations in the posting: Doctorate (Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related) + 1+ year technical engineering experience; OR Master’s degree in those fields + 4+ years; OR Bachelor’s degree in those fields + 5+ years; OR equivalent experience. Preferred combinations listed higher experience thresholds (Doctorate +3 years; Master’s +6 years; Bachelor’s +8 years). Related fields mentioned include Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, and other technical/engineering disciplines. Equivalent practical experience is accepted in lieu of a degree.
