Senior Linux Administrator
NVIDIAJob Title
Senior Linux Administrator
Role Summary
Responsible for the operational health, efficiency and observability of a large Linux compute farm that supports NVIDIA's VLSI design teams. The role combines hands-on system-level performance analysis, farm operations and building telemetry to make capacity and workload behaviour visible to engineers and leadership.
Experience Level
Senior - typically requires 8+ years in Linux systems administration or infrastructure operations at scale.
Responsibilities
Day-to-day responsibilities include operating and improving compute infrastructure, diagnosing performance issues, and delivering observability and efficiency improvements.
- Own operational health, capacity planning and efficiency of a large multi-user Linux compute farm.
- Profile and debug system-level issues (kernel, filesystem, memory, I/O) and implement fixes rather than relying on ticketing.
- Improve compute efficiency: optimize memory request vs usage, reduce CPU waste from idle/over-provisioned jobs, and refine resource prediction models.
- Build and operate observability: telemetry pipelines, time-series metrics, logs and dashboards that surface capacity, utilization and job behavior.
- Manage licence monitoring and expiry alerting for EDA tools and similar software estates.
- Perform live triage and work directly with heavy users to identify high-impact efficiency gains.
Requirements
Key technical and operational requirements. Degrees and fields are summarized in the Education Requirements section below.
- Must-have: 8+ years of Linux systems administration or infrastructure operations at scale.
- Deep Linux systems and kernel-level expertise: perf, eBPF/bpftrace, strace, cgroups, NUMA, memory management, scheduler behavior and I/O subsystems.
- Proven experience diagnosing and fixing performance problems on large multi-user compute systems.
- Strong skills in NFS and distributed filesystem troubleshooting (metadata vs data path, client behavior, mount and latency issues).
- Hands-on observability experience: time-series metrics, log/telemetry pipelines and dashboards (Prometheus/Grafana, Elastic, or equivalent); strong Python for analysis and automation.
- Familiarity with batch schedulers (LSF, Slurm, or equivalent) and job resource accounting, and an operational mindset for live support.
- Nice-to-have: Semiconductor/EDA or HPC experience.
Education Requirements
B.E./B.Tech or M.Tech in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
