Senior Lead Engineer - FPGA
Role Summary
Lead FPGA design, architecture and verification for avionics hardware within Collins Aerospace (RTX). Translate system and hardware requirements into FPGA implementations and provide technical leadership for safety-critical projects.
Hands-on work spans RTL development, synthesis and timing closure, verification, obsolescence management, and support for audits and certification activities.
Experience Level
Senior - minimum 6+ years of relevant FPGA/ASIC design and verification experience.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include hands-on design, technical leadership, and cross-functional coordination for safety-critical avionics FPGA projects.
- Develop FPGA designs from system requirements and define FPGA architecture.
- Capture device-level requirements from system/hardware requirements.
- Implement RTL in VHDL/SystemVerilog and perform code reviews.
- Perform synthesis, place-and-route and timing analysis and closure.
- Design and verify using MPSoC/RFSoC and discrete FPGAs (Microchip/Intel/Xilinx/Altera).
- Lead and mentor small design teams; provide technical guidance and reviews.
- Troubleshoot design and verification issues; drive problem resolution.
- Manage re-engineering and obsolescence of FPGA devices and IP.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams and represent the program during audits and certification activities.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and practical experience. Preferred items are listed separately.
- Minimum 6+ years FPGA design/verification experience.
- Expert-level VHDL and SystemVerilog coding and review skills.
- Hands-on experience with MPSoC and/or RFSoC devices.
- Experience with simulation and verification tools such as QuestaSim, VCS, Aldec.
- Proficiency in scripting for design and verification workflows.
- Experience with synthesis, place-and-route and timing closure.
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills; experience planning and executing design reviews.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with DO-254 process, audits, and FAA/EASA certification for DAL A/B hardware.
- Familiarity with tools such as DOORS, Jama, Polarion or Jira and tool qualification.
- Experience with interfaces and protocols: PCIe, ARINC-429, MIL-1553, ARINC-818, SPI, AXI, ADC.
Education Requirements
