Job Title

Senior Laser Designer

Role Summary

The Senior Laser Designer will develop and integrate photonic components, focusing on distributed feedback (DFB) lasers, into silicon photonic circuits for high-speed optical communications. The role covers design, simulation, tolerance analysis, test-chip execution, validation, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to move devices from concept through product qualification.

Experience Level

Senior-level. The posting specifies a Master's plus 6+ years of relevant experience or a Ph.D. plus 4+ years of industry experience; see Education Requirements for details.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Design, simulate, and optimize DFB lasers for high-speed optical communication applications.
  • Perform tolerance analysis to improve device performance, power efficiency, and reliability.
  • Lead test-chip execution activities including layout, tapeout, validation, and data analysis.
  • Develop and refine photonic modeling methodologies and propose new testing approaches.
  • Conduct research on emerging photonic technologies and contribute to IP development.
  • Analyze component characterization data to identify performance gaps and implement improvements.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary engineering teams to ensure system-level integration.

Requirements

Key must-have technical skills and experience:

  • Extensive experience designing and simulating DFB lasers, including InP epitaxial design.
  • Industrial experience developing DFB lasers in high-volume manufacturing and taking designs through product qualification.
  • Experience leading test-chip activities (layout, tapeout, validation) and analyzing test results to drive improvements.

Nice-to-have / preferred:

  • Project leadership experience.
  • Experience analyzing photonic or PIC test data using statistical tools (e.g., JMP) or data libraries in MATLAB/Python.
  • MATLAB programming experience and scripting for data analysis.
  • Familiarity with layout tools such as Cadence and KLayout for component design and test-chip execution.
  • System-level modeling expertise for optical-link performance and scalability.
  • Published research in peer-reviewed journals on photonics technologies.

Education Requirements

Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline with 6+ years of relevant experience, OR Ph.D. with 4+ years of industry experience. The posting indicates experience may be obtained through a combination of degree work, research, and relevant job or internship experience.
