Job Title
Senior FPGA Engineer
Role Summary
Join the Advanced Technology Development Operation (ATDO) to develop and mature secure embedded electronics and FPGA-based subsystems. Work spans ideation, prototype turn-up, and production acceptance for systems using commercial processors, ASICs, SoCs, GPUs and FPGAs.
The role supports development and analysis of anti-tamper and system-protection technologies for defense applications and requires close collaboration with small, multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Experience Level
Senior β the posting specifies 10+ years of direct experience developing embedded systems; advanced STEM degrees may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
Responsibilities
Primary tasks and scope of work:
- Lead hardware bring-up and turn-up of custom prototypes and mature them into deployable solutions.
- Design, simulate, synthesize, and validate IP for FPGA/ASIC projects and support closure to meet system requirements.
- Perform schematic review, lab testing, debugging, and troubleshooting of new and existing embedded designs.
- Develop and execute embedded debugging and emulation strategies.
- Implement and maintain low-level software such as advanced C code and hardware drivers for embedded platforms.
- Collaborate in systems engineering activities including architecture selection, documentation, and technical reporting.
- Mentor junior engineers and participate in technical leadership as needed.
Requirements
Must-have skills and qualifications:
- 10+ years direct experience developing embedded systems.
- Active Secret clearance or ability to obtain a DoD security clearance.
- Practical experience with schematic interpretation, lab testing, and debugging of custom electronics.
- Experience with FPGA development using VHDL and/or Verilog.
- Experience in design, simulation, synthesis, and validation of IP.
- Embedded debugging and emulation experience.
- Advanced-level C programming skills and experience creating hardware drivers.
Nice-to-have:
- Active Top Secret clearance.
- Technical lead / architect experience on embedded projects, including requirements derivation and conveying design intent.
- Experience with microcode, secure boot, real-time systems, and cryptographic algorithm implementation.
- Background in hardware security: tamper vulnerability research, side-channel analysis, fault-injection attacks, or reverse-engineering threat vectors.
- Experience authoring proposals, systems development plans, technical reports, and mentoring junior staff.
Education Requirements
B.S. or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a relevant technical field. The posting notes advanced STEM degrees (e.g., M.S., Ph.D.) and states advanced degrees may substitute for years of experience on a year-for-year basis.
