Senior FPGA Engineer - Control Systems
Role Summary
Join the control-systems team responsible for FPGA-based hardware that drives Atom Computing's neutral-atom quantum computers. The role implements and verifies FPGA logic for high-speed waveform generation, imaging, and digital control loops and works with systems engineers and firmware/software teams to integrate and test prototype systems.
Reports to the Control Systems Manager. Primary location Boulder, CO, with candidates also considered for Austin, TX and Berkeley, CA.
Experience Level
Senior — at least 5 years of relevant postgraduate professional experience.
Responsibilities
Design and validate FPGA subsystems to meet system-level control requirements.
- Design, implement, and test FPGA-based functions for high-speed arbitrary waveform generation, image acquisition, and digital control loops.
- Design efficient communication interfaces for software control, analysis, and monitoring.
- Develop functional block specifications from system requirements.
- Perform logic design and verification using Vivado (SystemVerilog and IP catalog).
- Write test procedures, execute component and system-level testing, debug hardware/firmware issues, and document results.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience for immediate contribution.
Must-have:- Proficiency with RTL design (SystemVerilog preferred; VHDL acceptable).
- Expertise in FPGA and microprocessor digital design; experience with Xilinx Vivado and Zynq SoCs.
- Experience with integration, debugging, and testing of prototype electronics assemblies.
- Familiarity with Git and FPGA design best practices.
- Programming experience in C, C++, and Python on Linux.
- Self-motivated, collaborative, and able to work in a fast-growing startup environment.
- RF electronics / software-defined radio experience.
- Analog electronics design experience.
- Experience with embedded Linux build systems (Yocto).
- Willingness to learn atomic/optical/laser physics and quantum mechanics concepts.
Education Requirements
BS or higher in Electrical Engineering, Experimental Physics, or a related field.
