Job Title

Senior FPGA Engineer

Role Summary

Join MITRE's Electronic Systems Development team to design and prototype FPGA- and ASIC-based embedded systems for sensor, communication, and navigation applications that support government research and development.

Work on rapid prototyping, algorithm implementation in hardware and software, and integration on embedded hardware platforms within cross-disciplinary teams.

Experience Level

Senior — typically requires 5+ years with a Bachelor’s, 3+ years with a Master’s, or equivalent combination of education and experience; PhD candidates with relevant experience may qualify.

Responsibilities

Deliver FPGA and embedded system designs from architecture through implementation and deployment.

  • Develop RTL components and integrate third-party IP for FPGA/ASIC designs.
  • Implement algorithms in hardware and software on embedded platforms.
  • Perform RTL synthesis, simulation, verification, and testing.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to prototype low SWaP-C systems and SDR platforms.
  • Document designs, maintain version control, and follow engineering best practices.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills, security eligibility, and onsite work expectations.

  • Proficient in RTL languages (VHDL, Verilog/SystemVerilog) and RTL synthesis/simulation tools.
  • Experience implementing complex embedded systems and integrating third-party IP.
  • Familiarity with verification, test, and deployment best practices.
  • Strong programming foundation and experience with processor interfaces (memory-mapped peripherals, interrupts).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and capable of obtaining and maintaining a DoD Secret security clearance.
  • Ability to work onsite a minimum of four days per week at the Bedford, MA location.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with reconfigurable SoC platforms (Xilinx MPSoC/RFSoC/Versal, Intel Agilex).
  • Experience across ASIC/digital design flow, EDA tools, and timing closure/place & route.
  • Familiarity with scripting/build tools (Tcl, Python, CMake) and MATLAB.
  • Exposure to hardware emulation platforms (Cadence Palladium, Siemens Veloce) and UVM/OVM methodologies.
  • Knowledge of microelectronic circuits and process nodes/foundries.

Education Requirements

Bachelor’s degree typically required (with 5+ years experience), or Master’s (with 3+ years), or PhD with relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred fields include Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or similar technical disciplines.
