Job Title
Senior FPGA Engineer
Role Summary
Join MITRE’s Electronic Systems Development team to design and implement FPGA- and ASIC-based prototype systems for R&D projects in sensing, communications, and navigation. Work with multidisciplinary teams to deliver embedded hardware prototypes, integrate IP, and validate algorithms on reconfigurable platforms.
Experience Level
Senior — typically requires 5+ years of relevant professional experience (or equivalent); candidates with 3+ years may qualify with an advanced degree.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include rapid prototyping, hardware development, and system integration on embedded platforms.
- Develop FPGA and ASIC components and integrate third-party IP into custom designs.
- Implement algorithms in hardware and software on embedded and reconfigurable SoC platforms.
- Perform RTL design, synthesis, simulation, and support timing closure.
- Lead design verification, testing, documentation, and deployment activities.
- Integrate and validate systems on SDR and high-throughput signal-processing platforms.
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to meet SWaP-C, performance, and deployment requirements.
- Support system-level prototyping, troubleshooting, and field testing.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, security, and on-site availability. Preferred skills listed separately.
- Practical experience with RTL languages and flows (VHDL, Verilog/SystemVerilog) and RTL synthesis/simulation tools.
- Experience implementing complex embedded systems and integrating third-party IP.
- Familiarity with industry best practices for design, verification, test, and deployment.
- Strong programming fundamentals.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
- Available to work onsite a minimum of four days per week in Bedford, MA.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with AMD Xilinx MPSoC/RFSoC/Versal or Intel Agilex SoC platforms.
- Experience across architecture, implementation, verification, test, and version control; familiarity with EDA ASIC flows and foundry toolchains.
- Scripting and build tools such as Python, TCL, CMake; MATLAB and signal-processing background.
- Familiarity with UVM/OVM verification methodologies and hardware emulation platforms.
- Exposure to microelectronic circuits, process nodes, and foundry flows.
- Demonstrated technical leadership in FPGA design and verification.
Education Requirements
Typical qualifications include a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience. Preferred: M.S. or PhD in Electrical and/or Computer Engineering or a similar field.
