Job Title
Senior FPGA Engineer
Role Summary
Design, test, and integrate FPGA-based digital signal processing and control algorithms for RF transmitter systems. Collaborate with hardware and software engineers through development, prototyping, verification, and system installation. Focus is on real-time DSP implementation, FPGA card design, and hardware/software interfaces.
Experience Level
Senior; approximately 8+ years of relevant experience is expected.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Define and document functional requirements for FPGA modules and circuit card assemblies.
- Architect, simulate, implement, and verify FPGA-based DSP (baseband processing, filters, NCOs, FFT, waveform generation).
- Design FPGA-based circuit card assemblies and develop hardware prototypes.
- Debug and test hardware using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, logic analyzers, and similar tools.
- Define and coordinate software tasks for hardware–software interfaces within FPGA-based assemblies.
- Create reusable circuit designs and manage design assets under version control.
- Design and execute test fixtures and test plans at chip and board level.
- Work on high-speed memory and bus interfaces (PCIe, DDR3) and Linux host / PCIe endpoint interactions.
- Communicate and collaborate with cross-functional teams, management, and customers.
Requirements
Must-have skills and conditions:
- Proficiency with Xilinx FPGA design flows (ISE and Vivado) and VHDL-based design entry.
- Experience across the full FPGA design flow: simulation, synthesis, implementation, and timing closure; recent work on Xilinx 7-series devices.
- Practical FPGA implementation of DSP algorithms: decimation/interpolation filters, fractional delay filters, asynchronous sample rate conversion, NCO, Hilbert transforms, FFT, and waveform generation.
- Experience with FPGA interfaces to A/D and D/A converters for RF sampling and waveform generation.
- Experience using version control for collaborative development and designing reusable circuits for multiple projects.
- Ability to design and implement test fixtures and test plans for chip- and board-level validation.
- Experience with FPGA-based high-speed memory and bus interfaces (PCIe, DDR3).
- Understanding of software/hardware interaction (Linux host / PCIe endpoint) and familiarity with FMC module interfacing and high-speed PCB layout.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to obtain a DoD secret clearance.
- Some travel is required.
Desired (nice-to-have):
- RF system design experience, specifically high-power and/or high-speed, time-based communication transmissions.
- MATLAB/Simulink modeling and translating high-level models into FPGA implementations.
- High-level programming in C and the ability to write simple Linux applications for FPGA test purposes.
- Practical understanding of time synchronization standards (e.g., IEEE-1588).
Education Requirements
BS or MS in Electrical Engineering (Qualifications specify BS or MS in Electrical Engineering with 8+ years of relevant experience).
