Job Title
Senior FPGA Engineer
Role Summary
Design and implement FPGA/ASIC components and rapid prototype embedded hardware systems for research and development projects supporting sensor, communication, and navigation applications. Join a multidisciplinary engineering team to develop proof-of-concept prototypes on state-of-the-art embedded platforms.
Experience Level
Senior β role expects an experienced engineer. Typical experience guidance: ~5+ years with a Bachelor's degree, ~3+ years with a Master's, or commensurate experience for candidates with a PhD or equivalent.
Responsibilities
Work on advanced embedded hardware platforms to deliver prototype systems and production-capable designs.
- Rapid prototyping of sensor, communication, and navigation systems on embedded FPGA/SoC platforms.
- Design and implement FPGA and ASIC components (architecture, RTL, synthesis, verification, test).
- Implement algorithms in hardware and software for embedded systems and integrate them into target platforms.
- Integrate third-party IP and vendor cores into custom designs; perform verification and deployment activities.
- Document designs, use version control, and follow established design and verification workflows.
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams and provide technical leadership for FPGA design and verification when needed.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, security and onsite requirements; preferred skills listed separately.
- Strong programming foundation and proficiency in RTL languages (VHDL, Verilog/SystemVerilog).
- Practical experience with RTL synthesis and simulation tools.
- Experience implementing complex embedded systems on FPGA/SoC platforms.
- Familiarity with industry best practices for design, verification, test, and deployment.
- Experience integrating third-party IP into custom designs.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- U.S. citizenship required for security clearance eligibility.
- Capable of obtaining and maintaining a DoD Secret security clearance.
- Ability to work on-site a minimum of four days per week (Bedford, MA).
Preferred / Nice-to-have:
- Experience with reconfigurable SoC platforms (AMD Xilinx MPSoC, RFSoC, Versal; Intel Agilex SoC).
- Hands-on experience across all phases of digital design: architecture, implementation, verification, test, and P&R flow.
- Exposure to advanced process nodes and foundries (GlobalFoundries, Intel, TSMC).
- Experience with processor interfacing (memory-mapped peripherals, interrupts).
- Familiarity with scripting and build tools (TCL, Python, CMake).
- Understanding of microelectronic circuits and transistor behavior; EDA ASIC flow experience (synthesis, timing closure, place & route).
- Basic signal processing knowledge and exposure to MATLAB.
- Experience with verification methodologies (UVM/OVM) and hardware emulation platforms (Cadence Palladium, Siemens Veloce).
Education Requirements
Typical qualification framework: Bachelor's degree (with ~5 years related experience), Master's degree (with ~3 years related experience), or PhD with relevant experience; equivalent combinations of education and work experience are acceptable. Preferred fields: Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or closely related technical fields. M.S. or PhD noted as preferred in the original posting.
