Job Title

Senior FPGA Engineer

Role Summary

Join MITRE’s Electronic Systems Development team to design and prototype advanced sensor, communication, and navigation systems on embedded hardware platforms. Work focuses on FPGA/ASIC component development and implementation of algorithms in hardware and software for government research and development projects.

Experience Level

Senior — typically 5+ years of related experience (or equivalent combination of experience and advanced study). Candidates are expected to contribute independently and lead technical efforts within multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include rapid prototyping, hardware development, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

  • Design, implement, and integrate FPGA-based components and IP for embedded systems.
  • Translate algorithms into hardware and co-develop software/firmware for deployment on SoC/FPGA platforms.
  • Perform RTL development, synthesis, simulation, verification, and debugging.
  • Integrate third-party IP and manage version control and documentation.
  • Support system-level test, validation, and deployment on SDR and other embedded platforms.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams on architecture, performance trade-offs, and SWaP-C optimizations.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills, security, and work expectations.

  • Proficient in RTL languages (VHDL, Verilog, SystemVerilog) and RTL synthesis/simulation toolchains.
  • Experience implementing complex embedded systems and deploying designs on reconfigurable platforms.
  • Familiarity with design, verification, test, and deployment best practices.
  • Experience integrating third-party IP into custom designs and using version control.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • U.S. citizenship required (per government eligibility) and ability to obtain/maintain DoD Secret clearance.
  • Position requires on-site presence a minimum of four days per week in Bedford, MA.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with AMD Xilinx MPSoC/RFSoC/Versal or Intel Agilex SoC platforms and hardware emulation systems.
  • Exposure to ASIC flows (synthesis, timing closure, place & route), EDA tools, and leading-edge process nodes.
  • Scripting and build tools (Python, TCL, CMake), MATLAB, and knowledge of signal processing concepts.
  • Experience with verification methodologies such as UVM/OVM and familiarity with processor interfaces and microelectronic circuits.

Education Requirements

Typical qualifications include a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related technical field. The posting allows equivalent combinations of education and related work experience (e.g., 5+ years with a Bachelor’s, 3+ years with a Master’s, or a PhD with relevant experience).
