Senior FPGA Engineer
Brandywine CommunicationsJob Title
Senior FPGA Engineer
Role Summary
Design, develop, verify, and support FPGA-based solutions for high-reliability aerospace, defense, and communications products. Work across electrical, firmware/software, test, manufacturing, and supply-chain teams to move designs from prototype into production.
Experience Level
Senior - minimum 8 years of professional engineering experience with significant hands-on FPGA design and system-level integration.
Responsibilities
Accountable for FPGA architecture, RTL development, verification, board-level integration, and production support throughout the product lifecycle.
- Design, develop, implement, and maintain FPGA digital logic for new and existing products.
- Create FPGA architectures and RTL using VHDL and/or Verilog/SystemVerilog; perform simulation, synthesis, implementation, and timing analysis.
- Develop and execute verification strategies, test benches, and hardware validation; debug hardware and FPGA-related issues.
- Integrate FPGA designs with processors, memory, clocks, and high-speed interfaces; troubleshoot cross-domain issues with electrical and firmware teams.
- Support FPGA device selection, lifecycle management, obsolescence mitigation, and migration of legacy designs.
- Maintain design documentation, source files, constraints, revision history, and release packages under configuration-control practices.
- Support prototype bring-up, lab testing, root-cause analysis, production troubleshooting, and work with manufacturing/EMS partners on DFM and production readiness.
Requirements
Core qualifications and skills required or strongly preferred.
- Minimum 8 years of professional engineering experience with significant hands-on FPGA design experience in aerospace, defense, communications, or other high-reliability systems.
- Proven experience with FPGA architecture, RTL design, simulation, synthesis, implementation, timing closure, and hardware verification.
- Proficiency in VHDL and/or Verilog/SystemVerilog and development of maintainable, reusable FPGA code.
- Hands-on experience with FPGA toolchains such as AMD/Xilinx Vivado, Intel Quartus, or comparable environments.
- Experience integrating and debugging FPGA designs at board and system level using laboratory test equipment and debug tools.
- Strong understanding of digital design principles, clock-domain crossing, timing constraints, interfaces, and FPGA best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and communicate effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Familiarity with PCB design/DFM, automated test, production support, and component obsolescence is preferred.
- Eligibility for U.S. Department of Defense security clearance may be required for some positions.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs occasionally, perform visual inspection of electronic components, and follow ESD and safety protocols.
Education Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field required. Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field is preferred. No specific certifications are listed as required.
