Job Title
Senior FPGA Engineer
Role Summary
Senior engineer responsible for architecture, design, implementation and verification of FPGA-based systems and associated firmware for defense electronic safe-and-arm devices. Work spans Verilog FPGA design, SystemVerilog UVM verification, and embedded microcontroller software.
Experience Level
Senior — typically requires 6+ years of relevant experience (see Education Requirements for experience equivalency with advanced degrees).
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include design, verification, and integration of FPGA and firmware components for weapon-system fuzing solutions.
- Analyze requirements and define architecture for FPGA, hardware, and microcontroller-based systems.
- Design and develop Verilog HDL targeting antifuse and enhanced-Flash FPGAs.
- Develop and maintain embedded C firmware and C# code for microcontrollers where applicable.
- Implement SystemVerilog UVM-based verification and use simulation tools (e.g., QuestaSim) for functional verification.
- Debug and profile hardware and firmware using lab tools and target host systems.
- Integrate sensor interfaces, A/D and D/A interfaces, communication protocols, state machines, and timer chains into ASIC/FPGA designs.
- Participate in code reviews, unit testing, prototyping, and product testing; contribute to process improvements to ensure quality and time-to-market.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, security, and process expectations:
- U.S. citizenship required (government contract).
- Extensive practical experience with FPGA design and Verilog for logic design.
- Proven embedded C programming experience, including algorithm development and optimized code for constrained devices.
- Experience using lab tools: logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, JTAG/ICE debuggers, and protocol analyzers.
- Familiarity with hardware, software and firmware development methodologies (design verification, code reviews, unit testing, prototyping, product testing).
- Experience with version control systems such as SVN, Git, or TFS.
- Solid digital design principles, logic architecture, and experience with HDLs (Verilog, VHDL).
Nice-to-have:
- SystemVerilog verification experience (AVM, VMM, OVM, or UVM).
- Experience with Microsemi/Actel FPGAs and QuestaSim simulation tools.
- Experience developing C# for enhanced-Flash microcontrollers.
- Strong English communication skills (written and verbal).
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree required OR equivalent experience. Hiring guidance from the source: 6+ years of relevant experience is standard; 4 years of experience if the candidate holds a Master’s degree; 10 years without a degree.
