Senior FPGA Design Engineer
Role Summary
Design, implement, verify, and integrate FPGA-based digital subsystems for advanced radar and missile seeker systems. Work on firmware development, simulation, hardware bring-up, and system-level integration within a multidisciplinary engineering team located in Huntsville, AL.
Deliver reliable, resource- and timing-optimized FPGA solutions, support lab integration and test activities, and provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers.
Experience Level
Senior β minimum 10 years of experience in FPGA design, digital systems development, or related engineering fields.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include design, verification, integration, and support of FPGA firmware and systems.
- Design, develop, and test FPGA-based digital systems for aerospace and defense applications.
- Develop and maintain FPGA firmware using Verilog, VHDL, or equivalent HDLs.
- Create and execute simulation and verification test benches; perform synthesis and timing analysis.
- Debug and optimize FPGA designs for performance, resource utilization, and reliability.
- Integrate firmware with hardware components, embedded processors, and software applications; support hardware bring-up and lab testing.
- Implement and validate communication interfaces and serial protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, RS-232/422, etc.).
- Implement DSP functions such as filters, FFTs, modulation/demodulation, and error-correction algorithms.
- Produce design documentation, block diagrams, test plans, and support technical reviews and customer presentations.
- Evaluate emerging FPGA technologies and tools to improve development efficiency and system capability.
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance as needed.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, clearance, and experience for immediate contribution.
- Minimum 10 years of FPGA design and digital systems experience.
- Proven experience with Verilog and VHDL design methodologies.
- Experience with FPGA simulation, verification, synthesis, timing analysis, and debugging.
- Proficiency with FPGA toolchains such as Xilinx Vivado, Intel/Altera Quartus, Synplify, ModelSim, and related environments.
- Strong knowledge of digital logic design, FPGA architectures, and digital electronics.
- Practical experience implementing DSP algorithms on FPGA platforms.
- Experience integrating firmware with embedded hardware and system-level software.
- Familiarity implementing and troubleshooting serial communication protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, RS-232/422).
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills; ability to produce technical documentation.
- U.S. Citizenship and active Secret security clearance required (must be able to maintain clearance).
Education Requirements
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
