Job Title
Senior FPGA Design Engineer
Role Summary
The Senior FPGA Design Engineer will design and deliver FPGA-based subsystems, contribute to board-level hardware and system architecture, and resolve high-speed interface and timing challenges. Work is focused on GPS-related products within a high-tech engineering team in Massachusetts.
This is a technical engineering role with responsibility across the FPGA development lifecycle: RTL design, verification, synthesis, timing closure, bring-up, and validation.
Experience Level
Senior — typically 5–10+ years of hands-on FPGA design and development experience.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include architecture, design, verification, and system integration of FPGA solutions.
- Develop RTL for FPGAs using VHDL/Verilog/SystemVerilog and maintain design repositories.
- Perform synthesis, timing analysis, and implement flows for Xilinx/Intel (Altera) devices and SoCs.
- Design and validate high-speed interfaces (PCIe, DDR4, Ethernet, SerDes, MIPI) and peripheral buses (SPI, I2C, UART, USB, RS232/485).
- Collaborate on board-level hardware design and system architecture to meet performance and timing constraints.
- Execute simulation, verification, and FPGA bring-up; diagnose and resolve hardware/software integration issues.
- Work with cross-functional teams (hardware, firmware, system engineers) and contribute to technical documentation.
- Mentor junior engineers and support design reviews and test planning.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, plus preferred additions.
- 5–10+ years of hands-on FPGA design and development experience (RTL, synthesis, timing closure, bring-up).
- Proven experience with VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog.
- Experience with Xilinx SoC FPGAs and toolchains (Vivado) and familiarity with Intel Quartus Prime or equivalent.
- Experience with high-speed circuit design and interfaces: DDR4, PCIe, SerDes, Ethernet, MIPI and common serial buses.
- Experience with FPGA simulation and synthesis tools (ModelSim, Vivado, Quartus, Lattice tools).
- Experience with ASIC or FPGA flows (Cadence or Synopsys exposure is a plus).
- Experience in safety-critical industries (defense, space, aerospace, military) is strongly preferred.
- US Citizenship is required; an active security clearance is a strong bonus.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
Benefits
Standard benefits package including three weeks vacation, medical/dental/vision, paid life insurance, 401(k) match, and profit-sharing.
