Job Title

Senior FPGA Design Engineer

Role Summary

Join the Electronic Combat Solutions Hardware Engineering Group to design, implement, and support FPGA-based systems across the development lifecycle. The role focuses on RTL development, synthesis, timing closure, verification support, lab bring-up, and field/product support for high-speed digital designs.

This position requires onsite work at a BAE Systems facility and involves collaboration with cross-functional teams to meet technical and program requirements.

Experience Level

Senior. Typical guidance: approximately 4+ years of relevant experience (see Education Requirements for degree/experience tradeoffs).

Responsibilities

Deliver FPGA designs from requirements and micro-architecture through implementation, verification, and product support.

  • Translate requirements into RTL and own RTL coding (VHDL or Verilog).
  • Perform synthesis, place-and-route, timing closure, and static timing analysis.
  • Develop basic simulation testbenches and perform digital simulation (Modelsim/Questa).
  • Debug in the lab: board bring-up, hardware verification, and root-cause analysis.
  • Implement clock domain crossing techniques and high-speed interface protocols (SERDES, PCIe, DDR, LVDS, etc.).
  • Maintain revision-control workflows and contribute to scripting/automation (Tcl, Python, Perl, shell).
  • Provide product support and collaborate with verification and hardware teams to resolve issues.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills, clearances, and work-eligibility.

  • U.S. citizenship required and must be able to obtain Secret security clearance.
  • Experience with FPGA or ASIC design and development, including RTL design (VHDL preferred or Verilog).
  • Familiarity with Xilinx Vivado or Intel/Altera Quartus toolflows.
  • Digital simulation experience with Modelsim/Questa and static timing analysis tools.
  • Experience with high-speed interfaces such as SERDES, PCIe, DDR2/3/4, and LVDS.
  • Revision control experience (GIT, CVS, Clearcase, Subversion, etc.).
  • Scripting or automation experience (Perl, Tcl, Python, shell) to support flows and testbenches.
  • Strong debugging, problem-solving, written, and oral communication skills; able to work in a team environment.
  • Willingness to be mentored and to mentor others as appropriate.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree is expected (posting indicates ~4+ years of relevant experience with a bachelor's); an advanced degree may reduce the years-of-experience requirement. Equivalent practical experience is acceptable where specified by the employer.
