Senior Firmware Engineer, Space
AndurilJob Title
Senior Firmware Engineer, Space
Role Summary
Join the Space Imaging team to develop firmware and FPGA architectures for spaceborne electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) payloads. Work across interdisciplinary teams to design electrical architectures, build and test prototypes, and mature them into flight-capable hardware.
This role includes hands-on FPGA/SoC RTL development, hardware/software integration, and leading small engineering teams through system definition and delivery.
Experience Level
Senior - requires 8+ years of experience developing HDL firmware for FPGA devices.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include FPGA architecture, firmware development, integration, and verification for space EO/IR payloads.
- Lead FPGA architecture, standards, development, and design reviews.
- Design, simulate, and integrate VHDL/Verilog/SystemVerilog RTL into FPGAs or SoCs for performance, area, and power.
- Perform hardware/software integration, processor bring-up, and board support tasks with multidisciplinary teams.
- Develop VHDL/Verilog testbenches and use lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers) for validation.
- Optimize algorithms for hardware acceleration and efficient use of on-chip buses (e.g., AXI/AXI-Stream).
- Prototype, ground-test, and mature designs into flight hardware; lead small engineering teams as needed.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, security and work-authorization requirements, plus preferred additional skills.
- Must-have: 8+ years developing HDL firmware for FPGA devices.
- Must-have: Expertise in VHDL and/or Verilog/SystemVerilog for RTL design.
- Must-have: Experience with FPGA toolchains such as Xilinx Vivado or Intel Quartus.
- Must-have: Strong hardware/software debugging skills and experience with lab instrumentation.
- Must-have: Proficiency with version control systems (e.g., Git).
- Must-have: U.S. Person status required and eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret security clearance.
- Preferred: Experience with multi-gigabit SERDES, DDR memory interfaces, Ethernet MAC/PHY, SPI, I2C.
- Preferred: Embedded software development (timers, interrupts, peripherals) and embedded Linux (device trees, drivers, bootloaders).
- Preferred: Familiarity with Python, MATLAB, and infrared image sensor technology.
Education Requirements
Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
