Job Title

Senior Firmware Engineer

Role Summary

The Imaging team is seeking a Senior Firmware Engineer to design and mature FPGA-based imaging products for defense applications. You will work on hardware/firmware architecture, prototype development, and integration leading to ground and flight testing.

This role partners with electrical, software, and systems engineers to deliver production-quality FPGA/SoC firmware and board support.

Experience Level

Senior - 10+ years of experience developing HDL firmware for FPGA devices.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include FPGA architecture, RTL development, integration, and validation for imaging systems.

  • Lead FPGA architecture definition, standards, design reviews, and development processes.
  • Design, simulate, and integrate VHDL/Verilog/SystemVerilog RTL into FPGAs or SoCs for performance, resource, and power targets.
  • Develop processor bring-up and board support packages; integrate firmware with software and hardware subsystems.
  • Create testbenches and perform verification using simulation and lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers).
  • Optimize algorithms and data paths for hardware acceleration and efficient use of on-chip buses (e.g., AXI, AXI-Stream).
  • Support prototype build, ground and flight testing, and transition of prototypes to production.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and clearances.

  • 10+ years developing HDL firmware for FPGA devices (RTL design and integration).
  • Expertise in VHDL and/or Verilog/SystemVerilog for RTL development.
  • Experience with industry FPGA toolchains such as Xilinx Vivado or Intel Quartus.
  • Strong hardware/software debugging skills and experience using lab instruments.
  • Proficiency with version control systems (e.g., Git) for collaborative development.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.

Nice-to-have

  • Design experience with multi-gigabit SERDES, DDR memory buses, Ethernet MAC/PHY, and common buses (SPI, I2C).
  • Embedded software experience (timers, interrupts, SPI controllers, ADCs) and familiarity with embedded Linux (device trees, drivers, bootloaders).
  • Experience with Python or MATLAB and familiarity with infrared image sensor technology.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field is typically required.
