Senior Engineer, Systems Engineering - Embedded Systems & PLC Controls
EntegrisJob Title
Senior Engineer, Systems Engineering - Embedded Systems & PLC Controls
Role Summary
Senior embedded software/firmware engineer responsible for developing, integrating, and supporting embedded firmware and PLC-based control systems for industrial and electromechanical products used in semiconductor manufacturing.
Works across hardware, mechanical, systems, manufacturing, quality, and product teams to translate requirements into designs; perform hardware bring-up, system integration, testing, qualification, and sustained support.
Experience Level
Senior - typically requires 5+ years of professional embedded software/firmware experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities focus on firmware development, integration, validation, and sustained support across the product lifecycle.
- Design, implement, test, and maintain embedded firmware in C/C++ for microcontroller- and processor-based systems.
- Develop low-level drivers, communication stacks, middleware, and application software.
- Implement and optimize real-time control functions: task scheduling, interrupts, state machines, timing, fault handling, and diagnostics.
- Integrate embedded controllers with PLCs, sensors, actuators, motors, drives, and industrial networks.
- Implement and troubleshoot serial and field communications: CAN, RS-232/422/485, UART, SPI, I2C, USB, Ethernet/TCP-IP.
- Perform hardware bring-up and debug using JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and related tools.
- Create and maintain requirements, architecture, interface documents, test plans, and troubleshooting guides.
- Develop unit, integration, regression, HIL, and system-level tests; improve automation and diagnostics.
- Participate in design and code reviews; follow version control, issue tracking, configuration management, and secure-development practices.
- Support NPI and sustaining engineering: verification, qualification, field troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, experience, and behaviors.
- 5+ years professional experience developing embedded software or firmware.
- Strong programming skills in C and C++ for embedded systems.
- Hands-on experience with RTOS concepts, interrupts, concurrency, timing, memory, and real-time constraints.
- Experience developing low-level drivers and integrating peripherals (SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, RS-485).
- Experience developing or integrating at least one industrial communication protocol or control network.
- Familiarity with version-control systems (Git), code review, defect tracking, and controlled software releases.
- Experience qualifying and validating software per written specifications through unit, integration, and system-level testing.
- Ability to read schematics and troubleshoot hardware/firmware interfaces using standard lab and debug equipment.
- Ability to produce clear requirements, design documents, interface specs, test plans, and test reports.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills; able to prioritize and manage multiple assignments.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field is required. A Master’s degree in a relevant engineering or computer-science discipline is listed as preferred. No specific certifications were required or listed.
Nice to Have
Additional skills that broaden fit but are not mandatory.
- Experience programming/integrating PLC platforms (Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Beckhoff, CODESYS).
- HMI and SCADA development or integration experience.
- Familiarity with industrial protocols: CANopen, Modbus, EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, EtherCAT, OPC UA, SECS/GEM, HSMS.
- Embedded Linux (Yocto/Buildroot), BSPs, device drivers, and system services.
- Motor-control, DSP, FPGA/CPLD/HDL, CI/CD, automated test frameworks, containers, or hardware-in-the-loop testing experience.
- Familiarity with industrial cybersecurity frameworks such as IEC 62443 or SEMI E187/E188.
