Senior Embedded Software Engineer

Role Summary

Join Arm's Software Engineering group to design and implement platform and system software for Arm application processors and microcontrollers. The team produces reference implementations, contributes upstream to open-source projects, and works with partners to validate and optimize software for Arm-based systems.

The role focuses on firmware, bootloaders, kernel and low-level system software, producing test plans and reference code used by partners and the wider ecosystem.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

• Design and develop platform and reference system software for Arm application processors and MCUs.
• Upstream and maintain open-source components (e.g. bootloaders, kernel, firmware).
• Support partners and collaborate with external engineering teams on integration and debugging.
• Prepare test specifications and test plans from software and hardware design documents.
• Develop unit tests and scripts to validate software and hardware functionality.
• Debug and optimize complex low-level software stacks for performance and reliability.

Requirements

Must-have qualifications and skills:

• Experience in firmware or Linux kernel development, including bootloaders and device drivers.
• Strong C programming skills and experience developing complex software stacks.
• Proven ability to debug and optimize complex system software.
• Familiarity with source control systems, preferably Git.
• Strong written and spoken English and good interpersonal/communication skills.
• Professional, flexible approach to work and problem solving.

Nice-to-have:

• Experience contributing to or working within open-source communities and upstreaming code.
• Familiarity with Arm architectures (Arm‑A, Arm‑M) and Arm v8‑A/v8‑M concepts.
• Knowledge of projects such as Trusted Firmware-A (TF‑A) and EDK II.
• Understanding of SMMU/IO‑MMU, RAS, hypervisors, CXL, power management, and security.
• Familiarity with standards like ACPI and UEFI and with open-source test tools and CI systems.
• Experience interacting with customers to diagnose and resolve issues.
