Job Title

Senior Embedded Engineer

Role Summary

Join the Imaging team to design and mature FPGA-based imaging and embedded systems used in defense applications. You will define architecture, implement HDL and firmware, build prototypes, support ground and flight tests, and collaborate with electrical, software, and systems engineers to deliver production hardware.

Work focuses on FPGA architecture, hardware/software integration, testing, and performance optimization for electro-optical and infrared imaging systems.

Experience Level

Senior - 10+ years of experience developing HDL firmware for FPGA devices (as stated in the posting).

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include architecture, design, integration, testing, and optimization of FPGA and embedded firmware.

  • Lead FPGA architecture, standards, development, and design reviews.
  • Design, architect, simulate, and integrate VHDL/Verilog/SystemVerilog RTL into FPGAs or SoCs for performance, area, and power.
  • Collaborate with electrical, software, and systems engineers for firmware integration, processor bring-up, and board support packages.
  • Develop VHDL/Verilog test benches and use lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers) to validate designs against specifications.
  • Optimize algorithms for hardware acceleration and on-chip bus protocols such as AXI and AXI-Stream; apply MIPS/resource optimizations.
  • Prototype designs and support ground and flight testing; mature prototypes toward production.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and qualifications, followed by preferred skills.

  • 10+ years experience developing HDL firmware for FPGA devices.
  • Expertise in VHDL and/or Verilog/SystemVerilog for RTL design.
  • Experience with FPGA toolchains such as Xilinx Vivado or Intel Quartus.
  • Strong hardware/software debugging skills and experience with lab equipment.
  • Proficiency with version control systems (e.g., Git).
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.
  • Willingness to work onsite in Waltham, MA (5 days per week).

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with multi-gigabit SERDES, DDR memory buses, Ethernet MAC/PHY, SPI, and I2C.
  • Embedded software experience (timers, interrupts, SPI controllers, ADCs) and embedded Linux (device trees, drivers, bootloaders).
  • Familiarity with Python, MATLAB, and infrared image sensor technology.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field is typically required.
