Senior Director, Hardware Engineering
Role Summary
Lead and grow a hardware engineering organization responsible for board- and system-level design, validation, and production deployment of high-speed photonics and electrical systems. The role combines strategic leadership, program management, and hands-on technical contribution to accelerate product development and scale manufacturing.
Experience Level
Senior-level — 15+ years of hardware design and development experience with significant leadership responsibility.
Responsibilities
Accountable for technical leadership, program execution, and cross-functional coordination across the hardware development lifecycle.
- Lead a team of hardware engineers across design, validation, and deployment.
- Drive project execution and ensure milestones are met with high quality and efficiency.
- Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Participate in board bring-up, debugging, and system integration activities.
- Support prototype builds, lab validation, high-volume manufacturing (HVM) and field issue resolution.
- Collaborate with mechanical, firmware, SI/PI, and manufacturing teams to ensure robust designs.
- Travel on short notice to vendor sites, manufacturing partners, and customer locations for troubleshooting, audits, and design reviews.
- Manage supplier relationships to meet quality, cost, and delivery targets.
- Oversee hardware development from concept through production; implement DFM/DFT, reliability testing, and compliance practices.
- Track deliverables, action items, project milestones and report progress to senior leadership.
Requirements
Key must-have skills and preferred qualifications.
- Must-have — 15+ years of experience in hardware design and development, including significant leadership experience.
- Must-have — Proven ability to debug hardware at board and system level using lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, etc.).
- Must-have — Strong knowledge of high-speed interfaces, power delivery, and system integration.
- Must-have — Willingness and ability to travel frequently internationally on short notice.
- Nice-to-have — Experience with data center hardware, networking equipment, or photonic/electrical interconnects.
- Nice-to-have — Familiarity with compliance standards (FCC, CE, UL, RoHS).
- Nice-to-have — Strong vendor management and cross-cultural communication skills.
- Nice-to-have — Track record of leading teams through NPI and scaling to volume production.
Education Requirements
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
