Senior Design Engineer / Principal Design Engineer

Role Summary

Responsible for package, footprint, carrier tape and box design for IC/discrete packages within Package R&D. Own the design process, ensure manufacturability and supplier capability alignment, and resolve physical issues across assembly and packaging.

Drive technical risk identification and mitigation, maintain design rules, and collaborate with cross-site and cross-functional teams and customers to deliver robust packaging solutions.

Responsibilities

The role leads packaging design activities and ensures process implementation across the development lifecycle.

• Create and validate new packaging methods, footprints, carrier tapes and box designs; identify gaps between design requirements and supplier capability.
• Identify technical risks and propose mitigations using design tools such as Design FMEA and simulation.
• Maintain and update footprint, carrier tape and box design rules to reflect assembly and supplier capabilities.
• Address customer physical issues (tape & reel, SMT, solderability, packing) and interface with customers and suppliers.
• Drive practical, implementable solutions and ensure consistent process adoption across projects.
• Occasional travel to suppliers or customer sites as required.

Requirements

Key technical and interpersonal skills required or preferred.

• Must-have: Knowledge of IC/discrete package design.
• Must-have: Experience with design tools such as simulation, Design FMEA and CAD.
• Must-have: Proactive, strong customer focus, able to work with minimal supervision.
• Must-have: Good interpersonal and presentation skills for cross-site and cross-functional collaboration; good command of written and spoken English.
• Nice-to-have: Design experience of solder footprints.
• Nice-to-have: Experience in handling customers; Mandarin is an advantage.
• Nice-to-have: Creative problem-solving and idea generation.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or materials science. Master's degree or higher preferred.
