Job Title

Senior Compiler Engineer - Backend

Role Summary

Develop and optimize NVIDIA's proprietary GPU compiler backend to generate high-performance machine instructions for graphics and compute workloads. Work on register allocation, instruction scheduling, and other code-generation passes within a cross-functional compiler and hardware team.

This role sits on the GPU Software Compiler team and collaborates with global compiler, hardware, and application teams to improve performance and reliability of compiler outputs.

Experience Level

Senior level. The posting specifies 3+ years of compiler code generation experience (preferably with LLVM).

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include implementing and improving backend compiler components and working with stakeholders to resolve issues.

  • Understand, modify, and improve a proprietary GPU compiler backend implemented in C++.
  • Design and develop register allocation passes and backend optimizations to improve performance and robustness.
  • Implement and maintain compiler optimizations, instruction scheduling, and supportable code-generation features.
  • Collaborate with global compiler, hardware, and application teams to prioritize and resolve issues.
  • Write tests and documentation to ensure maintainability and correctness of compiler changes.
  • Contribute to tooling and visualization for IRs and compiler internals as needed.

Requirements

Concise split of must-have and nice-to-have qualifications.

  • Must-have: 3+ years of compiler code generation experience (preferably with LLVM).
  • Must-have: Hands-on proficiency in C++ programming.
  • Must-have: Strong software engineering practices for writing robust, maintainable code.
  • Must-have: Good communication and documentation skills; self-motivated.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with LLVM code generation components such as instruction scheduling, software pipelining, register allocation, GlobalISel, TableGen, LLVM IR, and Machine IR.
  • Experience in compiler unit testing, IR tooling, and IR visualization.
  • Significant academic compiler project or thesis work.

Education Requirements

B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. (or equivalent practical experience). The posting states MS/PhD are highly desired.
