Job Title

Senior Communications System and Modem Engineer — TeraWave

Role Summary

Develop and optimize communications systems and modem algorithms for TeraWave, a high-throughput satellite communications system. Work across communications theory, DSP algorithm development, system modeling, and modem performance analysis to produce algorithms that move from simulation to implementation and system validation.

This is a hands-on senior technical role collaborating with modem architecture, ASIC, firmware, RF, and system engineering teams to deliver modem-level performance for a multi-orbit satellite network.

Experience Level

Senior — 10+ years of experience in communications systems, modem design, signal processing, or DSP algorithm development.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include design, modeling, and validation of modem and PHY algorithms for high-throughput satellite links.

  • Develop and optimize PHY, modem, and DSP algorithms for high-throughput satellite communication systems.
  • Create algorithms for synchronization, carrier and sampling frequency offset estimation/compensation, channel estimation, equalization, SNR estimation, and modulation/demodulation.
  • Implement system-level models in MATLAB, C/C++, Python, or equivalent to evaluate modem algorithms and end-to-end performance.
  • Model and analyze channels and impairments including noise, fading, interference, frequency/phase errors, nonlinearities, and RF impairments.
  • Evaluate tradeoffs across performance, complexity, throughput, latency, and implementation for modem architectures.
  • Collaborate with ASIC, RF, firmware, and system engineering teams to translate algorithms into implementation.
  • Support pre-silicon verification, prototyping, system integration, and post-silicon validation of modem algorithms.
  • Analyze end-to-end system performance and recommend improvements to modem and link performance.
  • Provide technical guidance and contribute to modem and communications-system architecture decisions.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills, experience, and eligibility.

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in communications systems, modem design, signal processing, or DSP algorithm development.
  • Strong understanding of digital communications and signal processing fundamentals.
  • Hands-on experience developing and simulating communications and DSP algorithms using MATLAB, Python, C/C++, or similar tools.
  • Strong understanding of OFDM-based systems, including synchronization, channel estimation, equalization, modulation/demodulation, and frequency-domain processing.
  • Experience developing and evaluating modem/PHY algorithms in end-to-end communication-system simulations.
  • Knowledge of practical RF and channel impairments and their impact on modem performance.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with modem, RF, ASIC, firmware, and system engineering teams.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum (export control requirement).

Nice-to-have:

  • Deep experience with modem PHY and DSP algorithm development for wireless, cellular, satellite, or broadband systems.
  • Experience with carrier/timing synchronization, CFO/SFO estimation and compensation, channel estimation, equalization, SNR estimation, FEC, framing, OFDM waveform design, and adaptive modulation and coding.
  • Fixed-point modeling and implementation experience for FPGA or ASIC systems; pre-silicon simulation, FPGA prototyping, or post-silicon modem bring-up and validation.
  • Experience with RF and mixed-signal impairments (phase noise, IQ imbalance, PA nonlinearities, ADC/DAC effects, quantization) and with satellite/non-terrestrial systems.
  • Familiarity with 3GPP PHY specifications and modern broadband wireless systems.

Education Requirements

Minimum: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline. Preferred: Master's degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Communications, Signal Processing, or a related field. (Degrees listed in job posting.)
