Job Title

Senior CAD Engineer

Role Summary

Join Microsoft Quantum to design and maintain CAD, layout, and verification flows for superconducting cryogenic control and readout circuits used in a measurement-based topological quantum computer. You will work on a multidisciplinary hardware team building scalable readout systems and professional-grade design infrastructure.

Experience Level

Senior. Typical experience: Bachelor's +5 years or Master's +3 years (equivalent practical experience accepted). Preferred candidates may have 8–12+ years or a doctorate with several years' experience.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include design, verification, and collaboration across device, packaging, and foundry teams to deliver scalable, low-noise superconducting circuits.

  • Design and layout superconducting cryogenic control and readout circuits operating at millikelvin temperatures.
  • Develop and maintain physical-design, layout, and verification workflows (DRC, ERC, LVS) tailored to superconducting processes.
  • Use industry-standard EDA and electromagnetic-simulation toolsets and physical-verification flows.
  • Define and refine PDK requirements, device models, and parameter extraction for superconducting circuit technologies.
  • Partner with foundry and research teams to evolve fabrication rules and device models for high-fidelity cryogenic operation.
  • Co-design with device, packaging, and quantum-hardware teams to meet noise, scalability, and reliability targets.
  • Develop test plans, test cases, and professional design infrastructure to support production and verification.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and compliance items; preferred skills are listed separately.

  • Proven experience with EDA and electromagnetic simulation toolsets and physical verification flows.
  • Experience in physical design and layout for analog/high-performance or cryogenic circuits and establishing DRC/ERC/LVS workflows.
  • Experience defining or using PDKs, device parameter extraction, and design-rule coverage for advanced processes.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with foundries, device and packaging teams to improve fabrication rules and device models.
  • Ability to meet specialized security and export-control screenings and provide proof of citizenship or permanent residency as required.
  • Ability to use modern AI tools to accelerate hardware development tasks (measurement analysis, modeling, automation).
  • Strong systems engineering mindset and experience working on fast-paced interdisciplinary teams.
  • Nice-to-have: deep analog/high-performance circuit design and layout experience; experience constructing and maintaining PDKs; prior work with superconducting qubits or cryogenic test systems.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field are referenced. The posting allows equivalent practical experience in lieu of a degree and specifies degree-based experience thresholds (e.g., Bachelor's +5 years, Master's +3 years; preferred: Bachelor's +12, Master's +8, Doctorate +5).
