Senior / Associate Staff Wireless Embedded Software Engineer
Silicon LabsJob Title
Senior / Associate Staff Wireless Embedded Software Engineer
Role Summary
Develop foundational embedded software for low-power wireless microcontrollers and SDKs used in IoT products. Work on low-level firmware, radio control, and performance- and power-sensitive system software used across Silicon Labs devices.
Join the RAIL (Radio Abstraction Interface Layer) team and collaborate with firmware, silicon, systems, and test engineers to deliver production-quality embedded software from design through release.
Experience Level
Senior (title contains Senior/Staff). Typical guidance: 5+ years professional embedded software or firmware development experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include end-to-end software ownership, low-level firmware development, debugging, and cross-discipline collaboration.
- Design, implement, and maintain embedded software for low-power wireless MCUs and SDKs.
- Own features from requirements and design through implementation, validation, release, and long-term support.
- Develop and optimize low-level firmware components: device drivers, startup/init code, timing-sensitive system software, and radio control.
- Optimize for performance, reliability, power efficiency, and constrained memory/CPU in real-time environments.
- Debug complex issues across software, firmware, and hardware boundaries using lab tools and debuggers.
- Collaborate with hardware, silicon, systems, and product teams for requirements, design reviews, and device bring-up.
- Contribute to automated tests, validation, and development tooling to improve product quality.
- Participate in code and design reviews and mentor other engineers.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience required for the role; followed by concise nice-to-have items.
- 5+ years professional experience in embedded software or firmware development.
- Strong programming skills in Embedded C and/or C++.
- Experience developing software for microcontrollers in resource-constrained, real-time environments (bare-metal and/or RTOS).
- Hands-on debugging skills at the hardware/software boundary (JTAG/SWD, debuggers, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers).
- Experience developing low-level software: drivers, interrupts, peripheral interfaces, timing-sensitive code.
- Experience taking features from design through implementation, test, and release.
- Experience using AI-powered tools to enhance productivity and analysis, with strong engineering judgment and validation practices.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with wireless technologies: Bluetooth LE, Zigbee, Thread, Wi‑Fi, or proprietary radios.
- Experience with PHY/MAC, radio control software, or timing-critical communication stacks.
- Experience optimizing embedded systems for low power, performance, and reliability.
- Familiarity with common interfaces and peripherals: SPI, I2C, UART, DMA, timers.
- Experience with Python or similar scripting for tooling, automation, or test.
- Experience with automated test, CI, validation frameworks, or hardware-in-the-loop test environments.
- Experience with silicon bring-up, hardware validation, or close collaboration with chip/board design teams.
- Experience with multi-core MCUs, concurrency, synchronization, or assembly on ARM/RISC-V.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field; or equivalent practical experience.
