Job Title
Senior Applications Engineer
Role Summary
Member of the Power Management business unit responsible for driving adoption of Renesas power-management solutions. Works with product definition, marketing, and field teams to enable customer designs and define next-generation DC-DC and multiphase power solutions.
Primary activities include hardware evaluation, circuit simulation, system-level debugging, and developing application materials and trainings to support internal teams and customers.
Experience Level
Senior — typically 7+ years of relevant experience (or 5+ years with a relevant Master’s degree).
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include technical customer enablement, product definition, and system-level support.
- Lead product promotion and design-in activities, including power-tree architecture and power-delivery system debugging.
- Contribute to product definition based on technical requirements and market needs.
- Review schematics and PCB layouts for evaluation boards and customer designs.
- Develop and run simulations of power converter circuits and systems to resolve technical issues.
- Author technical documentation such as application notes and design guidelines.
- Provide technical training on DC-DC converters and product usage to FAEs and customer engineers.
- Provide on-site and remote technical support, including root-cause analysis and debugging.
- Conduct competitive analysis and market research to inform marketing and strategy.
- Maintain a system-level understanding of customer applications to inform new product development.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience.
- Extensive experience with power ICs, MOSFETs, control loops, digital controllers, and multiphase buck converters.
- Required experience with analog circuit modeling and simulation tools (e.g., SIMPLIS, PSpice).
- Proficiency with lab equipment: oscilloscopes, electronic loads, function generators; experience automating lab equipment (Python or C) is a strong benefit.
- Familiarity with schematic capture and PCB design tools such as OrCAD, Allegro, and Cadence.
- Solid knowledge of DC/DC converter topologies (buck, boost, buck-boost, charge pump, intermediate bus converters) and control theory, including closed-loop compensation and stability margin analysis.
- Ability to perform system-level debugging and root-cause analysis in complex power-delivery systems.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for documentation and training.
- Nice-to-have: familiarity with Intel SVID/AMD SVI and PMBus/AVSBus interfaces; experience with lab equipment automation and scripting.
Education Requirements
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or Electrical/Computer Engineering (BSECE) with 7+ years of relevant experience, or Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) preferred with 5+ years of experience.
