Semiconductor Research Integration Engineer
Role Summary
Work on research and pathfinding projects to design, simulate, develop, and implement semiconductor process flows, devices, and integration schemes. The role sits within Intel Technology Research and partners with integration, device, TCAD, design, analytical, and manufacturing teams to advance device physics, materials, and process technologies.
This position requires regular on-site presence in Hillsboro to run experiments, access fabrication and characterization equipment, and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
Experience Level
Entry or early-career. The posting requires a PhD and at least 2 years of relevant experience in device physics, semiconductor process technologies, or materials research.
Responsibilities
Key day-to-day responsibilities include planning experiments, developing process solutions, and transferring research outcomes into development.
- Design and execute experiments to develop and characterize novel device/process concepts and materials.
- Perform integrated process feasibility studies and propose process innovations for performance, reliability, scalability, and yield.
- Introduce and evaluate novel materials and enhancements to existing process flows.
- Analyze electrical and physical characterization data (e.g., CV-IV, pulse testing, SEM/TEM/XRD) to guide program decisions.
- Collaborate with device, integration, TCAD, design, analytical, and vendor partners to meet technology roadmaps.
- Prepare technical summaries and status reports; identify resource and scheduling needs for transfers to development and manufacturing.
- Use data analysis to identify process design opportunities and manufacturing tool issues.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience required for initial consideration; preferred items are listed separately.
- Hands-on semiconductor processing experience and familiarity with thin films and modern transistor structures (e.g., FinFETs, nanoribbons).
- Practical experience with electrical characterization (CV-IV, pulse generation) and physical/materials characterization (SEM, TEM, SIMS, EDX, FTIR, XRD).
- Experience designing experiments and using statistical analysis tools (e.g., JMP or equivalent).
- Ability to perform integrated process studies and translate research results toward manufacturable solutions.
- Experience collaborating across multidisciplinary teams and working with external partners or vendors.
- Data analysis skills to extract insights from large datasets and diagnose tool or process issues.
- Preferred: experience with electrical test metrics, integration schemes, defect analysis, lithography, etch, and packaging processes; demonstrated leadership and strong communication skills.
Education Requirements
PhD in Electrical Engineering is required (minimum qualification).
