Job Title

Semiconductor Device Modeling Engineer

Role Summary

Member of the Compact Device Modeling Group (CDMG) within Design Enablement. Responsible for characterizing device behavior and developing, calibrating, and maintaining compact device models that enable accurate circuit simulation and faster product development.

This role supports process and design teams by delivering robust, validated models and automation to integrate into the design flow.

Experience Level

Mid-level. Typical background: Master's degree plus ~3+ years of industry experience, or PhD plus ~1+ year of industry or research experience; exact level varies with education and experience.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include device characterization, model development, validation, and cross-team collaboration.

  • Characterize semiconductor devices (DC/CV) and analyze measurement data to extract parameters.
  • Develop, extract, calibrate, and validate compact device models for new process technologies (e.g., BSIM and other models).
  • Create and maintain scripts and tools for data processing and test automation using Python, C, or Shell.
  • Perform simulations and model verification using commercial simulators and extraction tools.
  • Collaborate with process, layout, and circuit design teams to capture layout effects and model interactions.
  • Support reliability, RF/noise assessments, aging simulations, and corner/statistical analyses.
  • Document models, procedures, and validation results; ensure models are robust across corners and usage scenarios.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience; preferred items are listed separately.

  • Hands-on programming experience in Python, C, or Shell for data analysis and automation.
  • Knowledge or coursework in semiconductor device physics, process flow, layout, and circuit simulation.
  • Experience with device DC/CV characterization tools and measurement techniques.
  • Ability to work independently after initial ramp-up and to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills applied to device/model calibration and validation.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with BSIM or other compact models and extraction tools (e.g., ICCAP, MBP).
  • Familiarity with commercial circuit simulators (HSPICE, Spectre) and corner/statistical modeling.
  • Experience in Cadence environment (schematic capture, Virtuoso layout, DRC/LVS, layout extraction).
  • Experience with test automation, RF/noise/reliability testing, and aging/reliability methodologies.

Education Requirements

Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline with ~3+ years of industry experience, OR PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline with ~1+ year of industry or research experience (PhD dissertation focused on semiconductor devices or processes). Preferred: PhD with 3+ years industry experience. Related technical fields acceptable.
