Optical Applications Engineer

Role Summary

Support design-in and customer deployment of high-speed optical transceiver modules by providing hardware design, test, debugging, and application support. Work closely with sales, product marketing, and design engineering to resolve customer issues and enable product integration.

Experience Level

Mid-level (Level - Mid-Career). Requires more than 5 years of experience in optical module products and related hardware design.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include hardware design, customer support, testing, and documentation for high-speed optical transceiver products.

• Design hardware to support integrated transceiver products operating at >10 Gbps.
• Capture schematic intent and design high-speed PCBs; consider and simulate signal integrity.
• Perform lab testing, fault finding, debugging and resolution of internal and customer issues.
• Provide direct customer technical support in coordination with Sales to achieve product design-ins.
• Develop and maintain application documentation such as application notes and kits.
• Collaborate with product marketing, sales and design engineering during product development and design reviews.
• Work with business-unit application engineers on test and development tasks.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and professional abilities for successful performance in the role.

• More than 5 years' experience with optical module products.
• Knowledge of analogue and digital/MCU circuit design.
• Experience in high-speed PCB design and use of PCB design tools.
• Practical experience with signal integrity issues and designing mitigations for high-speed data links.
• Experience using measurement equipment: communication analyzers, bit error rate testers, optical sources/attenuators, and high-speed oscilloscopes.
• Familiarity with Python scripting for automated testing and measurements.
• Strong troubleshooting, organization, interpersonal and communication skills; English proficiency in speaking, reading and writing.
• Ability to manage time, priorities and multiple projects; work independently and in teams.
• Preferred: knowledge of SFF-8472/8636/CMIS for diagnostic monitoring interfaces.
• Preferred: 400G/800G/1.6T DSP optical module R&D experience and familiarity with PON protocol standards.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Communication, or a related technical field.
