Role Summary

Build a reference implementation of a full AI inference stack in Rust tuned to Fractile's custom hardware, implement a Linux kernel driver in Rust, and develop cloud tooling for datacenter deployments. Work within the Developer Experience team in the Software organisation and collaborate closely with hardware engineers in a co-design environment.

Experience Level

Mid-level engineer. Candidates with senior systems-language experience (C/C++) who can demonstrate strong Rust proficiency are encouraged. No explicit years-of-experience requirement listed.

Responsibilities

Core responsibilities include designing, implementing, and shipping systems-level software for AI inference on custom hardware, and contributing to team architecture and engineering practices.

• Design and implement a reference AI inference stack in Rust tuned for Fractile hardware.
• Develop a Linux kernel driver in Rust.
• Build cloud-based tooling and deployment solutions for datacenter-scale workloads.
• Research state-of-the-art inference techniques and bring improvements into the codebase.
• Collaborate with hardware engineers in a cross-disciplinary co-design process.
• Help shape team architecture, direction, and engineering culture from the ground up.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and behaviours, plus a few desirable extras.

• Must have: Strong Rust skills, or senior-level experience in a systems language (C/C++) with demonstrable Rust proficiency (open-source or personal projects).
• Must have: Experience serving AI workloads (e.g. vLLM or equivalents) or deep systems-level experience in low-latency data movement, paging, caching, or real-time processing.
• Must have: Solid computer science fundamentals and the ability to read and understand unfamiliar code quickly.
• Must have: Ability to work autonomously in ambiguous problem spaces.
• Nice to have: Experience with AI inference frameworks or ML accelerator architectures.
• Nice to have: Prior startup or small-team experience.
• Nice to have: A portfolio of Rust projects you can share.
