RF Engineer - Quantum Processor Design, Layout and Simulation
QuantWareJob Title
RF Engineer - Quantum Processor Design, Layout and Simulation
Role Summary
Join the Quantum Processor Team to design and optimise on-chip RF/microwave components and to build the design infrastructure that enables scalable quantum processor development. You will work on PDKs, DRC flows, tapeout generation tools and collaborate with fabrication and measurement teams to deliver advanced QPU prototypes.
Experience Level
Mid-level. The role expects experienced engineers; relevant hands-on experience of roughly 4+ years is typical.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include technical design work and developing the workflows and tools required for chip development and transfer to fabrication.
- Develop and maintain quantum chip design toolchain components (PDKs, DRC flows, tuners, tapeout generation tools).
- Own chip design projects for R&D and product development, including layout and RF/microwave optimisation.
- Manage the development loop: coordinate design, fabrication, and measurement to ensure successful transfers and iteration.
- Support foundry customers and internal teams to ensure designs conform to QuantWare's PDK and operational standards.
- Identify bottlenecks and drive process improvements across tools, workflows, and design-to-tapeout pipelines.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; bonus items are listed separately.
- Hands-on experience with RF simulation tools such as ANSYS HFSS, Sonnet, or equivalent; ability to model and optimise microwave structures.
- 4+ years of collaborative Python programming experience.
- Proven record of delivering complex technical projects with initiative and autonomy.
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills; comfortable working across disciplines and taking ownership from day one.
Nice-to-have / Bonus:
- Direct experience with superconducting and quantum circuits.
- Familiarity with quantum design/layout tools (e.g., Qiskit Metal, KLayout, GDSFactory) and CI/CD pipelines.
- Knowledge of nanofabrication processes and cryogenic measurement techniques.
Education Requirements
MSc or higher-level understanding of circuit design and microwave / RF engineering.
