Job Title
Research Engineer, ML H-W/S-W Codesign
Role Summary
Join Reality Labs Silicon to develop hardware-aware machine learning solutions for AR/VR and wearable AI devices. Work on model development, hardware acceleration, and software systems to enable power- and compute-efficient training and on-device inference.
The role focuses on co-design across algorithms, model architecture, and system/hardware stacks to meet strict latency and power constraints for edge devices.
Experience Level
Mid-level (Level - Mid-Career). The posting does not specify exact years of experience but expects demonstrated research or engineering experience in AI systems or hardware acceleration.
Responsibilities
Responsible for research and engineering that bridges ML algorithms and hardware/system design for on-device AI.
- Identify and solve multi-discipline ML acceleration problems involving algorithms, network design, and hardware architecture for AR/VR use cases.
- Collaborate across hardware and software teams to drive co-design solutions and integrate algorithmic improvements with system architecture.
- Codesign and prototype novel ML accelerator and system architecture ideas to improve compute and power efficiency.
- Develop and apply model compression and scalability techniques (numerics, pruning, distillation) for resource-constrained devices.
- Optimize models for hardware accelerators to meet latency and power targets.
- Define use cases, create benchmarks and evaluation methodology, and communicate trade-offs with partners.
- Stay current with research, attend conferences, and contribute to publications or patents.
Requirements
Key must-have skills and additional preferred qualifications are listed below.
-
Must-have: Experience developing AI-system infrastructure, AI algorithms, or AI hardware acceleration using C/C++ or Python.
-
Must-have: Demonstrated ability to work across hardware and software teams and to influence cross-functional partners through data-driven analysis.
-
Nice-to-have: Experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow or similar ML toolsets.
-
Nice-to-have: Knowledge of on-device algorithm development, hardware-aware ML models, and/or optimizing ML compilers for accelerators.
-
Nice-to-have: Experience with training/inference of large-scale models (CV and/or LLMs) and evaluating trade-offs in performance, power, and latency.
-
Nice-to-have: Demonstrated research outputs such as publications, patents, grants, or notable open-source contributions.
-
Nice-to-have: Experience adhering to responsible and ethical AI practices.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a relevant technical field OR equivalent practical experience. The posting also references a PhD in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science (or equivalent experience) as a qualifying credential.
