Job Title

R&D Software Engineer

Role Summary

Join the Virtual Machine Monitor Group to develop core CPU and memory virtualization technology for Broadcom's VMware Cloud Foundation products. The role focuses on low-level system software that enables virtual CPUs, memory virtualization, and related acceleration for cloud and hybrid-cloud platforms.

Experience Level

Senior-level. Typical experience expectations are multi-year industry experience; see Education Requirements for degree-linked years-of-experience guidance.

Responsibilities

The engineer will design, implement, and maintain virtual machine monitor features and work with hardware and software teams to enable new CPU and memory capabilities in a virtualization context.

  • Design and implement virtual CPU and memory features for the monitor (virtual machine platform).
  • Enable and validate CPU feature support, x86_64 ISA virtualization, and hardware virtualization features (e.g., VT-x/AMD-V).
  • Implement and optimize memory virtualization/management and interrupt virtualization.
  • Write and maintain production C code and assembly for low-level, machine-specific functionality.
  • Collaborate with other engineers, product teams, and customers; contribute to design roadmaps and technical proposals.
  • Debug, test, and modernize monitor architecture and integrate support for accelerators, power-aware compute, and guest timekeeping.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and conditions.

  • Strong proficiency in C and assembly programming.
  • Experience working on kernels or virtualization platforms.
  • Deep understanding of processor architecture, low-level OS kernel internals, memory management, resource management, and interrupt architecture.
  • Proficient with x86_64 CPU architecture and virtualization technologies (e.g., VT-x/AMD-V).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an engineering team; effective technical communication skills.
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the United States.

Education Requirements

Degree and experience combinations specified: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field with 8+ years of related experience; Master's degree in Computer Science or related field with 6+ years; or PhD with 3+ years. The posting indicates these degree-based combinations as the expected educational background for the role.
