R&D Quality & Reliability Engineer

Role Summary

Responsible for defining and executing quality and reliability strategies for Broadcom's Silicon Photonics product portfolio. Works with development and manufacturing teams to qualify devices, lead failure analysis, and support product transfers and volume ramps.

Experience Level

Mid-level (consistent with an experienced engineering role). The posting specifies experience expectations tied to degree level (see Education Requirements).

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include planning and executing reliability qualifications, driving failure analysis to closure, and supporting product transfer to manufacturing.

• Develop and manage end-to-end reliability qualification plans and reports for silicon photonics devices, transceivers, co-packaged optics, and related technologies.
• Lead failure analysis investigations, identify root causes, and implement corrective/preventive actions across cross-functional teams.
• Collaborate with development teams to ensure designs meet quality and reliability requirements for new product introductions and volume ramp.
• Partner with manufacturing to facilitate product transfers and maintain quality during volume production.
• Maintain Product/Process Qualification (PPQ) and Change Management best practices to protect customers and product integrity.
• Prepare and present regular quality and reliability updates and reports; support customer visits and audits.
• Apply reliability stress, test, and failure analysis methods for 2D/2.5D/3D packaging and Devices (IC & Photonic IC components).

Requirements

Required technical skills and professional capabilities.

• Proven expertise in quality and reliability for silicon photonics and related technologies (photodiodes, modulators, lasers, waveguides, fiber optics, wafer fabrication, IC packaging).
• Experience with advanced packaging (2D/2.5D/3D), design for reliability, design for test, and semiconductor characterization.
• Advanced statistical and analytical skills; experience with JMP, Python, R, or MATLAB and database development for HVM support.
• Experience with failure analysis techniques and presenting technical quality updates to stakeholders and customers; prior customer-facing experience preferred.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to work independently in a fast-paced, lean environment.
• Willingness to travel up to 10%.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's (with ~12+ years experience), Master's (with ~10+ years), or PhD (with ~7+ years) in Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a related technical field.
