R&D Motion Control Engineer
Role Summary
Design, integrate, and optimize motion and automation subsystems for semiconductor inspection and metrology equipment. Work across electrical, mechanical, software, and systems engineering to deliver high precision, reliable, and safe motion-control solutions.
Responsible for system bring-up, debugging, performance tuning, validation, and lifecycle support from concept through production.
Experience Level
Mid-level — typically requires 3+ years of experience in control systems, automation, motion control, or complex electromechanical products.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include design, integration, validation, and support of motion-control subsystems:
- Design control architectures for high-precision semiconductor equipment.
- Integrate motors, drives, encoders, sensors, actuators, and safety mechanisms into machine platforms.
- Lead system bring-up, debugging, tuning, and performance optimization.
- Define requirements, specifications, and engineering documentation for control subsystems.
- Investigate technical issues using structured root-cause methodologies and drive corrective actions.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to meet system-level performance, reliability, and manufacturability goals.
- Support products through the full development lifecycle, including production and field support.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience:
- 3+ years' experience in control systems, automation, motion control, or complex electromechanical products.
- Hands-on experience with motors, drives, encoders, sensors, PLCs, and industrial communication networks.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to drive technical tasks independently and work effectively in cross-functional teams.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with semiconductor capital equipment or precision automation systems.
- Knowledge of machine safety and motion-control tuning.
- Familiarity with EtherCAT, CAN, ProfiNet, Modbus, or similar protocols.
- Experience with MATLAB, Simulink, TwinCAT, Python, C#, or equivalent engineering tools.
Education Requirements
B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field is listed as required.
