R&D IC Design Engineer
BroadcomJob Title
R&D IC Design Engineer
Role Summary
Design and validate high-speed ASIC blocks for 10Gbps–400Gbps backplane, cable and optical-fiber communications. Work at block level from architecture through silicon bring-up within an IC design team.
Experience Level
Senior — role expects substantial industry experience (typically 10–12+ years depending on degree).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Architect block-level design from marketing/system requirements and produce detailed design documents and timing constraints.
- Develop RTL (Verilog/VHDL), perform equivalency checks, static timing analysis (STA) reviews, CDC and lint checks.
- Run RTL and gate-level simulations, review results, and support silicon bring-up and debugging.
- Write scripts for STA, equivalency checks, testbenches, simulations and synthesis automation.
- Create block-level resource estimates and development schedules; generate verification and test plans for design validation.
- Perform design tradeoffs (leakage, dynamic power, die size, schedule, resource allocation, priorities).
- Coordinate with remote teams across time zones during development and qualification.
Requirements
Core technical requirements and desirable skills.
- Must-have: Strong experience in high-speed digital circuit design and practical lab/silicon debugging.
- Must-have: Good knowledge of 10G/100G Ethernet and OTN networks.
- Must-have: Proficiency with RTL simulation and synthesis; familiarity with STA, CDC, lint and equivalency flows.
- Must-have: In-depth knowledge of low-power design techniques, Design-for-Test (DFT) and Design-for-Manufacturing (DFM).
- Must-have: Programming/scripting skills (Verilog or VHDL; Unix shell/Perl or Python; C).
- Must-have: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to follow through and close issues.
- Must-have: Understanding of full IC development flow including silicon qualification for volume production.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with ARM subsystems, DSP design, error-correction coding, and high-level synthesis.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with backplane/cable/optical-fiber communication link design.
Education Requirements
B.S. in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering (typical candidate with ~12+ years of directly related experience). M.S. or Ph.D. in EE or Computer Engineering may be accepted with reduced experience expectation (~10+ years). Fields: Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or closely related technical degrees.
