Job Title

R&D Engineering Staff Engineer

Role Summary

Work on computational lithography models in the Proteus R&D team to develop optimization and numerical methods that improve model calibration speed and robustness for semiconductor manufacturing.

Translate mathematical models into production-quality C++ code, prototype in Python, and collaborate with product, field support, and customers to validate solutions on real manufacturing data.

Experience Level

Senior role. Preferred: PhD in a relevant field with 1–2 years of industry experience (recent PhD graduates encouraged). Alternatively, MS with approximately 5 years of directly relevant industry experience.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include designing algorithms, implementing production code, and working with cross-functional teams to deploy and validate models.

  • Design and implement optimization techniques to reduce model calibration runtime while preserving accuracy.
  • Prototype mathematical models and translate specifications into production-quality C++ integrated with the Proteus product line.
  • Calibrate and tune non-linear model parameters using statistical analysis, numerical optimization, and domain heuristics.
  • Analyze outlier data and develop sampling strategies to improve robustness across process variations.
  • Maintain and extend a large, mature codebase; diagnose performance and correctness issues.
  • Collaborate with field engineers and customers to troubleshoot model behavior and validate solutions with manufacturing data.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and practical experience.

  • Strong C++ skills for performance-critical numerical software and Python for prototyping and data analysis.
  • Deep background in physical modeling, statistical analysis, and optimization methods applied to engineering problems.
  • Solid foundation in numerical computation, including non-linear solvers, parameter fitting, and convergence analysis.
  • Experience analyzing large, noisy datasets and turning findings into model improvements.
  • Experience working on large, multi-contributor software projects with long product lifecycles.
  • Excellent communication skills for explaining technical results to mixed audiences (field engineers, product managers, researchers).
  • Nice-to-have: experience in computational lithography, optical modeling, or image processing.

Education Requirements

PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field is strongly preferred (recent PhD graduates encouraged; PhD with 1–2 years industry experience ideal). Alternatively, an MS in a related field with approximately 5 years of directly relevant industry experience is acceptable.
