R&D Engineering, Staff Engineer
SynopsysJob Title
R&D Engineering, Staff Engineer
Role Summary
Develop and maintain production-quality meshing and computational geometry software in C++ used by Synopsys simulation and analysis products. Work on surface and volume mesh generators, geometric data structures, and robustness and performance improvements across large codebases.
This is a hybrid role based in Vancouver within a small focused meshing R&D team reporting to a Sr. Staff Engineer; you will collaborate with engineers across simulation, CAD, and analysis disciplines.
Experience Level
Senior-level. Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of 5 years related experience, or an advanced degree plus a minimum of 3 years of related experience (see Education Requirements for details).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include designing, implementing, and improving meshing and geometry-processing components for production use.
- Design, implement, and maintain meshing and computational geometry algorithms in C++ for production simulation tools.
- Build and optimize geometric data structures, surface and volume mesh generators, and processing pipelines.
- Debug geometry-related failures, including mesh quality, numerical robustness, and algorithm correctness across large codebases.
- Translate mathematical and geometric concepts into efficient, maintainable software.
- Improve performance, scalability, and robustness of existing meshing components.
- Collaborate with R&D teams in simulation, CAD, and analysis to align capabilities with product needs.
- Contribute to architecture and design decisions affecting geometric data flow through simulation tools.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience for immediate contribution.
- 3+ years of hands-on software development experience (or advanced-degree equivalent experience) building production software systems.
- Strong proficiency in C++ for performance-sensitive systems and experience working in large codebases.
- Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design.
- Practical experience with geometric algorithms, meshing, mesh generation, geometry processing, CAD development, or closely related areas.
- Experience diagnosing and resolving numerical stability, precision, and edge-case issues in geometry code.
- Proven ability to optimize software for performance and scalability.
- Good communication skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams.
Education Requirements
Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Computational Geometry, or a related technical field plus a minimum of 5 years related experience, or an advanced degree (Master's or PhD) plus a minimum of 3 years related experience. Master's or PhD with a focus on computational geometry, meshing, geometric modeling, or CAD is preferred. Equivalent practical experience may be considered.
