R&D Engineer, Physical Design

Role Summary

Join Broadcom's Design Implementation team within the ASIC Products Division to take integrated circuit designs from concept to product release. The role focuses on CMOS ASIC physical design for AI/ML, wireless, networking, computing, and storage applications.

The engineer will work on chip-level planning, place-and-route, physical verification and tapeout, and will interact with customers and internal teams to meet power, area, and performance targets.

Experience Level

Level: Senior. Experience guidance: MS in Electrical Engineering with ~10+ years related experience or BS in Electrical Engineering with ~12+ years related experience (see Education Requirements for details).

Responsibilities

Core responsibilities include hands-on physical design tasks and cross-team/customer collaboration.

• Integrate Broadcom IP blocks, memories, SerDes, and I/O subsystems into designs.
• Plan chip-level floorplanning and perform place-and-route.
• Perform timing analysis for both mission and test modes; drive timing closure activities.
• Address signal integrity and clocking architecture challenges.
• Perform physical verification and support tapeout activities.
• Evaluate design trade-offs involving power, area, and performance.
• Communicate directly with customers and cross-functional teams to resolve implementation issues.

Requirements

Must-have practical skills and experience for successful performance in this role.

• Proven hands-on experience in chip planning, P&R, physical verification, and tapeout.
• Strong timing-analysis skills, including work in mission and test modes.
• Experience with signal integrity issues and clocking architectures.
• Experience integrating IPs, memories, SerDes, and I/O subsystems.
• Ability to evaluate power, area, and performance trade-offs and deliver to schedule.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills for customer and cross-team interactions.

Education Requirements

BS in Electrical Engineering with 12+ years related experience, or MS in Electrical Engineering with 10+ years related work experience.
