R&D Engineer - Hardware
BroadcomJob Title
R&D Engineer - Hardware
Role Summary
Senior analog/mixed-signal designer responsible for designing high-speed wireline circuitry for data center connectivity products. Work includes circuit design, validation, characterization, and system-level interaction with SoC and board/package constraints.
Experience Level
Senior. See Education Requirements for degree and years-of-experience guidance.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities focus on architecture, detailed circuit design, validation, and manufacturability of high-speed analog/mixed-signal functions for wireline serial link applications.
- Design and validate high-speed analog/mixed-signal circuits for fiber optics, Gigabit Ethernet, enterprise storage, and routers.
- Research and implement novel circuit techniques to maximize speed and performance while minimizing power and area.
- Create and validate circuit models to define package and PCB requirements.
- Characterize and debug analog designs for manufacturability; develop and execute circuit test plans.
- Perform layout-oriented design work in a non-ASIC product environment and collaborate with layout engineers.
- Analyze experimental test results and select components based on specifications and reliability.
- Work on complex technical issues, exercise engineering judgment, and coordinate with stakeholders across teams.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience for successful performance in this role.
Must-have:
- Analog circuit design experience targeting >1 GHz operation (amplifiers, drivers, equalizers, PLLs, etc.).
- Deep understanding of CMOS device operating regions and characteristics.
- Familiarity with common CMOS analog topologies and trade-offs (noise, distortion, bandwidth, stability, mismatch).
- Knowledge of signal processing in analog filters, ADCs, DACs and feedback-controlled loops.
- Experience with simulation tools, custom layout tools, and lab equipment (oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, test instruments).
- Experience characterizing, debugging, and validating analog/mixed-signal circuits for manufacturability.
- Ability to develop circuit test plans and translate system-level requirements into circuit/package/PCB constraints.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with broadband communication SoC architectures and wireline serial-link systems.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and experience working across technical and management levels.
- Proactive, collaborative approach to technical development and project facilitation.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Engineering plus 5+ years related experience, or Master’s degree in Engineering plus 3+ years related experience. Equivalent practical experience considered where explicitly stated by employer.
