Job Title

R&D Director / Sr. Principal Engineer, Semiconductor Process and Device Simulations

Role Summary

Lead R&D for a simulation platform focused on semiconductor process and device modeling (TCAD) within the Calibre Semi R&D team. Develop high‑fidelity, high‑throughput numerical solvers and scalable software to support advanced-node semiconductor manufacturing and device analysis.

Work closely with product teams and customers to deliver validated, production-ready simulation tools that meet performance and turnaround requirements in a hybrid work mode based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Experience Level

Senior — director/principal engineering role requiring extensive research or industry experience in semiconductor simulation and high‑performance computing.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include technical leadership, architecture, delivery, and team coordination:

  • Define technical strategy and roadmap for process and device simulation tools and DTCO workflows.
  • Design and implement high‑performance numerical algorithms, solvers, and distributed/GPU‑accelerated computation.
  • Lead, mentor, and coordinate R&D engineers; produce reliable task estimates and deliver releases on schedule in a hybrid environment.
  • Collaborate with customers and partners to validate models and ensure production readiness for advanced nodes and 3D memory/IC technologies.
  • Drive performance optimizations and integration with broader EDA toolchains.

Requirements

Must-have technical and leadership qualifications; concise list of skills and attributes.

  • Expertise in semiconductor process integration, device physics, or TCAD simulation tools.
  • Proven experience in scientific/high‑performance computing: FEM/FD/FVM, linear/PDE solvers, computational geometry, optimization.
  • Experience with distributed processing and GPU acceleration (CUDA ecosystem).
  • Strong software development skills in C/C++ and Python; experience with CUDA and modern development practices.
  • Demonstrated management and project delivery skills: task estimation, team leadership, and on‑time delivery.
  • Strong problem‑solving ability and a collaborative working style.
  • Nice-to-have: experience applying AI/ML to accelerate simulations and familiarity with advanced nodes (e.g., 2/1.4/1.0nm), 3D NAND, and 3DIC technologies.

Education Requirements

PhD with 10+ years of research or industry experience, or MS with 15+ years of research or industry experience, in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or Engineering (for example Electrical, Mechanical, Civil). Equivalent practical experience is acceptable; no specific certifications required.
