Quantum Measurement and Calibration Engineer — Automated Calibration
QuantWareJob Title
Quantum Measurement and Calibration Engineer — Automated Calibration
Role Summary
Join the Calibration Software team to develop production-grade Python software that automates QPU bring-up, device pre-screening, gate and readout calibrations, and continuous recalibration routines. The role sits at the intersection of experimental quantum physics and software engineering.
You will work as an individual contributor with Software Engineers, Experimental Physicists, and Production teams to make QPU bring-up fast, reliable, and repeatable.
Experience Level
Mid-level — expects approximately 2+ years of hands-on experience in relevant measurement or calibration roles.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities focus on implementing and maintaining automated calibration and characterization software and ensuring code quality and integration with production workflows.
- Implement, test, and maintain automated Python software for rapid characterization and calibration of large-scale QPUs (resonator spectroscopy, crosstalk matrices, single- and two-qubit gates, readout optimization).
- Design modular, maintainable code with automated tests, documentation, and CI/CD integration.
- Own software features from concept through coding, validation, review, and integration into production workflows.
- Collaborate with processor development and production teams to gather requirements and iterate on calibration workflows.
- Validate and benchmark calibration routines and contribute to continuous recalibration pipelines.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience. Nice-to-have items are listed where applicable.
- Hands-on experience (2+ years) in cryogenic measurement of multi-qubit superconducting quantum processors, including two-qubit gate calibration.
- Strong proficiency in Python for data acquisition, automation, and scientific pipelines.
- Practical software engineering skills: object-oriented design, version control (Git), code review, and testing frameworks (PyTest or similar).
- Experience building automation to replace manual measurement workflows and improving reliability of hardware bring-up.
- Effective collaboration and communication in multidisciplinary teams (physics and software).
- Nice-to-have: experience with CI/CD for scientific code, instrumentation control, signal processing for resonator/readout optimization, and production-scale calibration pipelines.
Education Requirements
PhD in Physics, Quantum Information, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field; OR a Masters degree with 2+ years of equivalent industry experience. Equivalent practical experience in relevant experimental quantum measurement or software engineering is acceptable.
