Product Development Engineer (Analytical Hardware)

Role Summary

Work on the System Engineering team in Totowa, NJ to design, develop, and validate analytical hardware used for in-process chemical analysis. The role covers requirements definition, conceptual design, prototype testing, and cross-disciplinary integration with mechanical, electrical, and software teams.

Primary focus areas include microfluidic dispensing, spectrophotometric measurements, materials compatibility, and vendor-driven component development.

Experience Level

Entry-level / Early career. Typical background: Masters degree with 0 years' experience, or Bachelors degree with ~2 years' related experience.

Responsibilities

Deliver engineering solutions for analytical chemical-process equipment and support field implementation.

  • Define requirements and specifications with Applications, R&D, and engineering teams.
  • Develop and execute test plans, validate materials and device performance, and document results.
  • Conceptualize and prototype new devices when existing solutions are insufficient.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software teams to review designs and resolve integration issues.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting in manufacturing and field environments; support customers and internal teams.
  • Manage vendor activities to drive improvement and testing plans.
  • Occasional domestic and international travel (<20%).

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a background in engineering or physical sciences.
  • Practical experience or familiarity with chemical labs and cleanroom environments.
  • Working knowledge of diagnostic and troubleshooting methods for fluidic dispensing, opto-spectrometric systems, motion control, and electromechanical subsystems.
  • Understanding of interactions among mechanical, fiber-optic, fluidic, electromechanical, and software/control systems.
  • Familiarity with scientific and statistical tools such as MATLAB, Python, or LabVIEW.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills for supplier and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced programs and respond to field/internal escalations.

Education Requirements

Master's degree (accepted with 0 years' related experience) or Bachelor's degree (with ~2 years' related experience). Relevant fields include engineering (mechanical, electrical), physical sciences, physics, material science, microfluidic systems, spectrophotometry, and fiber-optics.
