Product Development Engineer 1

Role Summary

Perform physical failure analysis (PFA) and product development activities for DRAM products on the Boise, ID team. Work focuses on finding and analyzing physical defects, correlating electrical failure modes to physical root causes, and supporting yield-improvement projects.

Day-to-day work includes operating failure-analysis tools, preparing STEM/TEM samples, producing detailed reports, and creating procedural and PFA reference documentation. Position may telecommute part-time.

Responsibilities

Core responsibilities include failure analysis, sample preparation, and documentation to support product yield and reliability.

  • Conduct physical defect analysis and correlate defects to electrical failure modes.
  • Use CAD/layout to correlate failures when necessary.
  • Perform layer-by-layer de-processing using wet and dry etch techniques.
  • Operate Focused Ion Beam (FIB) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).
  • Perform fault isolation including voltage contrasting (PVC).
  • Prepare lamella (thin samples) for Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM); submit TEM requests and coordinate analytic work.
  • Save images, write detailed technical reports, and consult with internal/external customers.
  • Create DRAM physical failure analysis (PFA) and procedural reference documents.
  • Perform statistical analysis on product data to drive yield improvement projects.

Requirements

Key technical skills and practical abilities required for the role.

  • Practical experience operating FIB and SEM tools.
  • Ability to prepare lamella for STEM and TEM analysis (sample handling and precision preparation).
  • Experience with de-layering samples using mechanical polishing, chemical etch, and dry etch methods.
  • Knowledge of chemical safety procedures relevant to failure analysis labs.
  • Familiarity with CAD/layout tools for failure correlation.
  • Ability to apply statistical tools for detailed data analysis aimed at yield improvement.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills for reports and customer consultation.

Education Requirements

Employer will accept a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field (or equivalent practical experience as indicated by employer language).
