Process Integration and Yield Engineering PhD Intern
Role Summary
The intern will support development and optimization of semiconductor manufacturing processes, defect analysis, and yield-improvement initiatives in high-volume production. Work is performed within Intel Foundry and involves collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams on metrology, process troubleshooting, experiments, and data-driven process improvements.
This position requires on-site presence and is not eligible for employment-based visa/immigration sponsorship.
Experience Level
Entry-level internship for PhD students (typical candidates are 2ndβ3rd year PhD candidates). Student / Intern role.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include hands-on process and yield work in a manufacturing environment.
- Develop and optimize module processes and integration flows for semiconductor manufacturing.
- Analyze defect data, design and run experiments, and assist in risk assessments to support yield improvements.
- Troubleshoot process-flow issues and collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement corrective actions.
- Optimize metrology strategies and apply data analysis techniques to improve process performance.
- Participate in continuous improvement projects and document results for production integration.
- Contribute to innovative technical projects to build expertise relevant to Intel Foundry objectives.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience for successful internship performance.
- Proficiency in microscopy techniques and metrology.
- Background in circuit design and semiconductor device physics.
- Basic scripting ability in Python or a comparable language for data analysis and automation.
- Familiarity with scan methodologies and automatic test pattern generation.
- Experience analyzing defect data, designing experiments, and applying statistical/process analysis methods.
- Ability to work in a cross-functional team, communicate technical results, and support manufacturing-scale projects.
- Nice-to-have: experience with image analysis software and large visual computing models; coursework in algorithms, solid-state physics, electronics, and silicon process technologies.
Education Requirements
Actively pursuing a PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or Chemistry. Preferred candidates are 2nd or 3rd year PhD students with coursework in computer science (basic algorithms), solid-state/semiconductor physics, electronics/circuit design, and silicon process technologies. Minimum GPA: 3.0.
