Job Title

Principal VLSI Engineer

Role Summary

Lead VLSI architect within HPE's engineering organization responsible for defining architectures, methodologies, and standards across multiple platforms and product teams. Provides technical leadership, influences strategic technical decisions, and mentors engineering teams and external partners.

Position is hybrid with an expectation to work on average two days per week from an HPE office in Sunnyvale, CA.

Experience Level

Senior-level role; typically requires 10+ years of relevant VLSI experience.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include technical leadership, architecture definition, and cross-functional coordination:

  • Develop organization-wide VLSI architectures and design methodologies across platforms and business units.
  • Act as recognized technical authority and review VLSI designs for compliance with guidelines and standards.
  • Define product features and contribute to industry standards and technical direction.
  • Provide leadership and technical accountability for multiple project teams and external partners.
  • Mentor and guide less-experienced engineers and participate in selection of future technical leaders.
  • Identify emerging VLSI technologies and evaluate their impact on product roadmaps.

Requirements

Must-have skills and experience (education details are listed separately under Education Requirements):

  • Typically 10+ years of experience in VLSI design and development.
  • Deep expertise in VLSI principles, digital logic, and computer architecture.
  • Mastery of hardware description languages, EDA tools, and scripting/programming for design and verification.
  • Proven leadership with experience influencing technical decisions across teams and with external partners.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and executive-level communication skills.
  • Demonstrated record of innovation (patents, publications, presentations).

Education Requirements

Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent; equivalent practical experience acceptable.
