Principal Thin Films Engineer, Advanced Packaging
Role Summary
Lead development and optimization of thin film deposition processes for advanced packaging memory products. Work within Advanced Packaging Technology Development (APTD) to move concepts from R&D through pilot manufacturing and production transfer.
Collaborate with process integration, failure analysis, yield, manufacturing, and equipment vendors to define thin film technology roadmaps and implement robust, production-ready solutions.
Experience Level
Senior - requires 7+ years of industry experience in advanced packaging with specialization in thin film deposition and characterization.
Responsibilities
Deliver and implement thin film process solutions that meet physical and electrical requirements for Micron products.
- Develop, optimize, and characterize thin film deposition processes for advanced packaging products.
- Collaborate with process integration and cross-functional teams to create and validate solutions.
- Optimize processes to reduce cost, variability, and greenhouse gas emissions while improving capability.
- Perform root-cause and failure-mode analysis and work with vendors to resolve hardware and process limitations.
- Maintain and operate a technology development pilot manufacturing line.
- Support transfer of processes to production facilities (may require minimal travel).
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, experience, and behaviors.
- 7+ years of industry experience in advanced packaging focused on thin film deposition and characterization.
- Proven understanding of thin film growth and characterization techniques.
- Proficiency with data analysis, design of experiments (DOE), and statistical techniques.
- Knowledge of thermodynamics and chemical kinetics as applied to film deposition.
- Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills to guide technical decisions and project strategy.
- Experience conducting root-cause analysis and engaging vendors for equipment/process improvements.
- Experience maintaining pilot manufacturing lines and supporting production transfer.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with plasma processing and its effects on film properties.
- Experience with programming, scripting, automation, or using AI agents to streamline experiments or analysis.
Education Requirements
MS or PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or a related technical field; equivalent advanced academic training is acceptable.
